The Museum of Moving Image

A visit to this museum of moving image gave us a more knowledge about a camera technologies. We had a very intelligent guide who tried to explain everything very well. We had a general idea about camera technology because we discussed in the lecture and we saw photo materials but seeing all of this, in reality, gave us greater experience and more understanding about the camera. I would like to talk about THAUMATROPE. It was the most interesting thing for me which was presented in the museum. As guide mentioned the thaumatrope was invented in 1825 by John Ayrton Paris. The images painted on each side and appear to merge. Also, ZOETROPE was presented there. I remember zoetrope from lecture and it was great that we had a chance to see in reality how it works. Also, it was really memorable experience that we been in automated dialogue replacement (ADR) room. Our students tried to record their voice and then they replace some movies and cartoons dialogue. As guide said “ADR is also used when the film is dubbed from one language into another” and also he mentioned that “Dialogue can be re-recorded in a studio after filming is over.” He also talked about the importance of music in the movie and showed us an example. As we saw the choice of music can dramatically alter the tone of the scene. And music can also be used to undermine or deny the emotional content of the image. We saw and talked about a lot of things but those are facts that I remembered most. It was really fun and awareness day.

Blog #3– Relationships Between Shot

My choice for Blog#3 is the movie “BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY’S”. I would like to describe dance scene when Audrey and his partner (Paul) sitting at the bar and watching the dance.

This stripper scene was deleted from the movie but still, I want to analyzed editing strategy. The first shot is taken from the top and after this shot coming the dancer’s scene. I can say that action is matched. This match of action creates a “visual bridge” which draws the viewer’s attention away from slight cutting. 180 rules are used in this scene because the viewer can understand where the shot has happened, which location. In this case, a shooting has occurred in some bar, restaurant or even strip club.

I think the graphic is matched too. There is two different scene. Audrey and Paul shot and shot of dancer. Both scenes are going smoothly, which means the transitions are used very clearly. Also, eyeliner is matched in the precision. We see Audrey’s close up shot how she is looking something and then we see the dancer. It means that viewer can get what character saw, what is subject which is observed by character. It means that if we show our character looking at something, we better make sure our audience gets to see it too.

The content is obviously perceived in this scene. Because composition, colors, angle movement, character’s makeup or dressing style are matched in this scene. I can identify point-of-view of this shots. I know POV is usually created by being positioned between a shot of a character looking at something, and a shot showing the character's reaction and in this case, we can see both of the character’s reactions.

HK/NY Home Hong Kong/ New York Student Film Festival and Exchange

On April 5th, 2018 Hunter college create the film festival event. It was filmed exchange event and participants been undergraduate and graduate students from Hunter and Hong Kong Baptist University. Students shared short films around the theme of “HOME”

There was shown 6 Film from NY students and 6 Film from Hong Kong Students. Each film was quite different from each other and it was so interesting. I can talk about all the movies shown because all of them were outstanding but I'd like to single out a few of them.

A first short film which was shown it was “LUCKY” by Dai Zhenni from Hong Kong. The film was about a person who lost his wife and daughter in a car accident. After this fact, he decided to take a revenge on the driver but he met a dog on his way which changed his life. It was pretty interesting, I liked the idea how it was shot. It was not just a film on the drama, but there were also a number of shots that made us a smile. Overall, this film said his words at this festival. Another film which I liked the most was “THE DINNER” by Chan Tin Long Javier. It was about the single mom who was busy with her work and it showed how growing up children from the single mom and it showed how difficult is to be a single mom. I also want to say some words about the film “GREENLAND” Film was illustrated. I know to create illustration and then animated this illustration is a most difficult part for Film and media major students and I think a person Zang Wang did a great job.

My favorite Film From the students of hunter college was “PAM AND FLIP” which was about a couple who returned in Kentucky and build a new house and “MAY 22ND, 2012” which was about a girl who lost her mother. Both films were documentary.

Finally, all films were interesting. During this event, I find out that Hong Kong Students like to create fiction films and NY students love a documentary. But Idea “HOME” was correctly and beautifully presented in each film. Students were able to show the problems and lifestyle in their country by their film

"What I hear"

I woke up in the morning and start thinking about my project. I left home and went to the playground close to my house to do my assignment, which calls “what I hear. I’m living in the Bensonhurst area in Brooklyn. I always knew that playground area is the noisiest place in the evening time but it was early morning when I decided to do my assignment. I close my eyes and start listening. First what I heard was stroller sound. Then was foot and walking sound. It was normal because people are going to the playground in the morning to walk with children. Foot sound was most important for me because all walking rhythm was almost same because it was morning and people were in rush. Also, I heard humans often breath. Which means that people were running around the playground and doing their morning exercises. When I realized all of humans foot voice then I start listening more deeply to imagine what was happening around me. I heard dogs were running. Some of them were barking and some of them chewing their toys. I also heard dog leash sound. How owners are catching them to make a leash on them. After all of this listening, I thought that out there was no more interesting sound anymore. But suddenly I heard something new for me. It was kind of music and as I get it, it was Chinese music. Then I heard steps and jumping sound. That time I realized that people were doing their morning exercise. This assignment was very interesting to me because I always perceived environment by visually.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Hi I’m Tatia Kutaladze
My name is Tatia , not Tania.  I love my name and I don’t want to be Tania.

I was born and raised in Tbilisi, Georgia. I want to declare that Georgia is a country, and I’m from this country. It’s been a few years that I’ve been a resident of New York. Upon arrival to this country, my priority was to study. I already knew who I should be in the future, I’ve never doubted myself in this decision, and here I am years later still pursuing my dream of becoming a journalist. This is a decision that dates back to my childhood.

Although people were skeptical about my decision, I started working for my own purposes. When I came to this country I was not fluent in the English language at all, people were very surprised when I told them that I wanted to become a journalist!

I will be honest and say that I have chosen journalism because I don't like the routine of life. This is a profession that involves a variety of interesting areas that will make my life more interesting. For me, to be a journalist means, work 24 hours a day, endure any weather, deal with any respondent and deny negative energy directed toward you.

When I was studying in high school, I met a Georgian famous journalist who made a huge influence on me. She gave me some advice and convinced me of my abilities. I’m still grateful to her because she showed me the way to which I need to go.

Yes,  I’m here and I believe that I’ll  achieve my goal.
